What is Taro Bubble Tea?
When you think of Taro Bubble Tea, you probably won’t think of roots pulled from the dirt being used to make your drink. However, that’s the reality. Taro is a root plant that’s derived from the plant Colocasia Esculenta. It’s also sometimes referred to as Kalo, eddo, or dasheen.
You’ll find the root throughout China and in certain parts of Egypt as well. Traditionally, the root is colored in a light lavender shade, but it can also be white or even pink. Before it was used to create the popular Taro Bubble Tea, it was usually baked, boiled, mashed, or even fried. It’s also frequently referenced in Hawaiian culture.
In bubble tea, Taro is ground into a fine powder and usually mixed with sweetener and non-dairy creamer. Most bubble tea powder that you buy will be a 3-in-1 mixture of flavor powdering, sweetener, and non-dairy creamer.
